The Grail Quest
When the series first came out I was not sure about the character, and in the first 3 books of the series I'm still not sure. However in the fourth story which is not part of the Grail hunt, the character seems to have softened, and he's starting to grow on me.
1356 is not part of the Grail hunt which was resolved in Heretic, but it does have all of the characters from that series, and continues more or less where Heretic finished.
So in the words of Bernard 'roll in the women, and when the story flags, kill some Frogs'.
