Enemy of GodStorylineFollowing the battle at Lugg Vale, peace has finally come to the British Kingdoms. However it does not last with an attack from a supposed ally. Mordred comes to the throne, but from the outset it is apparent that he will not be a great King. Manipulated by Sansum and into sending Arthur and Derfel into a trap, Mordred is deposed, and allegedly dead.Meanwhile Christian ferment in the Kingdom is whipped up by the bands of travelling priests, which breaks out into a violent upheaval, with all pagans being killed or forced out of their homes. Arthurs return however, reduces the fervour, as he sets about reclaiming Mordreds Kingdom, but there is one more surprise in store for Arthur, one which will destroy him utterly.
ReviewAnother piece of brilliant writing from Cornwell, with a mixture of magic and heroic actions in battle. The tale follows straight on from Lugg Vale, and follows Derfels travels into the wild unknown of Anglesey, which is ruled by an Irish Warlord. Merlin appears to be dying, as the treasures that he sort for so long are lost in a fire. However treachery is afoot in the land, and as Merlin says, the Gods love chaos. The story is a slow burner, however a lot of Cornwell's tales start off slowly, and then explode into action. it allows you to learn about the characters and the events, before being absorbed into the action of the story. Some people may have a problem with this, but I for one love these slow burns. Like the previous book, a lot of the detail is down to Cornwell's imagination, as we have so little knowledge of what this period was like, however it is so well written that you are drawn into the world of the warring Britons. Whether the historical aspect is accurate is largely irrelevant as the descriptions and story telling gradually take hold of you and you want to learn more. A very good story, lots of detail, and action, and quite a few surprises to keep you going.
